Review: Succubus Shadows

Author: Richelle Mead
Series: Georgina Kincaid #5
Publisher: Kensington
Published: March 12th 2010

Georgina Kincaid has formidable powers, all child's play to a succubus like her. Helping to plan her ex-boyfriend's wedding is a different story. Georgina isn't sure which is worse - that Seth is marrying another woman, or that Georgina has to run all over Seattle trying on bridesmaid dresses. Still, there are distractions. Georgina's roommate, Roman, is cluttering her apartment with sexual tension. Then there's Simone, the new succubus in town, who's intent on corrupting Seth. But the real danger lies in the mysterious force that's visiting her thoughts, trying to draw her into a dark, otherworldly realm.

Succubus Shadows sounded very promising. From the summary, you expect to read about Georgina and how she's dealing with her Seth issues along with some dark force that's trying to kill her. Instead, we get a few chapters of that before Georgina is thrust into some dream limbo state, her body in the real world vanishing into thin air. At first it didn't seem so bad. Dreaming all day's got to be better than helping your ex get married and dealing with an annoying killer roommate, right? Wrong. Turns out some demons are out for revenge and want to drive her insane. Georgina's now constantly reliving past memories and is having twisted dreams put into her head. The demons' goal - drive her nuts until she can't tell truth from lie. I thought this concept was very interesting, but that was before we were forced to read a slow and boring first third of the book. In the beginning, I found the dreams and memories quite slow and tedious but as we moved along, I found myself loving them and wanting to know more about Georgina's past. Amongst the dreams and flashbacks, we were sporadically shown pieces of reality. Those little glimpses may have somewhat helped me eventually enjoy the book more also, as I was initially very impatient to get back to the real world and to the real issues. Who cares about her past when we've got all of this conflict in the real world to explore?

So, a couple random thoughts of mine…
  • Simone - I hated her. What a slut (and not even in a succubus way).
  • Niphon - Him again?! Once again he's up to no good and it's 110% clear that he wants to mess with Seth.
  • Roman - Loved him, as always. Sweetness and worry towards Georgina = my melting heart.
  • Erik - Great character, although where he was heading was very obvious. Richelle wasn't going for obvious this time, it seems…
  • Carter - Can he and Georgie get married? I love him! I'm not too sure what it is about him but I would not be opposed to Georgina/Carter at all. He seems awfully close and attached to her so I hope that's explained some more in the next book!

The ending of Succubus Shadows is huge. So huge that I really can't say describe anything without spoiling. I can only say that a couple key pieces of information finally link together and we are left with one big, steaming pile of cliffhanger.

Overall, a great book. It has a slow start, but eventually moves at the fast pace we've grown used to.

Succubus Revealed is released on August 30th and will be the final installment of the Georgina Kincaid series. Who's sad to see it end?
